-bowles one. let's bring in the panel for analysis. brit hume and joe trippi. okay, brit. your thoughts? >> well, you are right, governor romney came out. he was aggressive. when do you that, you are always in danger of seeming rude or... pugneighbors. i don't think he d. -- bug -- pugnacious. high seemed to display extraordinary knowledgeability. i don't think president obama had a bad night in the sense that he was way off his game. he was a lot like the president obama we are used to hearing. i don't think he seemed rusty. but i don't think he had the spark or the energy or the precision tonight that governor romney had. governor rom he in a good night. he didn't have a big moment that becomes a sound bite and affects how people look back on the debate. but this was a strong performance by governor romney. he needed one. i think he got it. >> joe? >> i think romney did himself a lot of good tonight. he was there on the issues. he knew his stuff. he didn't back down to the president or the moderator. and he didn't -- he didn't cross the line because you can do that and i think that wo

to almost smack down edwards. benson and quayle, famous. joe biden, everybody talks about the gaffes on the trail, but he won most of the democratic primary debates in 2008. >> but this is a high wire act with joe biden. they are going to be pouring cola down his throat. they'll have a couple of days of bad polling. you have ryan who is very impressive but hasn't done this before. and biden who is a high wire act in an attack mode, which isn't always his natural place. it will make for a good -- >> if i can ask you this, hilary. there is an immediate reaction to these debates about, wow, how do you feel? there is so much information. and this was such a sconstant substantivive debate between romney and the president. you can't score that at all. there is an initial impression and a second impression that develops over time. how does that factor? we've seen it. they are going to try to grind down romney on the idea that he is a chia chameleon, who do you trust, to he really performed well. >> well, the group of undecideds showed that they didn't necessarily change their vote one way o

is nominated to become chief justice. the senators birch bikeby, ted canady, joe biden, they don't lay a hand on him early and so he is so excellent that perry and these questions and the hearing record of 71 is closed and suddenly shortly before the vote is to take place on rehnquist and also one lewis powell who is was up at the same time, shortly before that the vote is to occur but after the hearings are closed "newsweek" magazine, the supreme court reporter for "newsweek," really great guy, he comes up somehow with this memo from the jackson files, the memo relating to brown versus board of education and it's a bombshell. and so, birch by, the senator from a very liberal and a great senator from indiana at that time, birch bias at this point leading the fight against rehnquist. he is leading the liberal fight against rehnquist and they know it's going to be close and they probably know it's going to go down -- but it's close. he starts really pushing in the publicity starts coming out and nixon and his attorney general john mitchell who actually have kind of concocted this whole rehnquis
